BRUSSELS — The European Broadcasting Union has named Jean-Paul Philippot prexy for a two-year term beginning in 2009. He will succeed Fritz Pleitgen of German regional broadcaster ARD.
Philippot is general manager of pubcaster RTBF, operating in French-speaking Belgium. A relative newcomer to broadcasting, he joined RTBF in 2002 with a mandate to restructure. Before that he ran the public hospitals in the Belgian capital.
The EBU has also selected Richard Sambrook, director of BBC Global News, to be its next veep, replacing Boris Bergant of RTVLSO in Slovenia.
The EBU is the largest association of national broadcasters in the world, with 75 members in 56 countries in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East and 45 associates elsewhere.
