‘Outrageous’ tops N. Zealand Awards

TV drama nabs eight prizes at Qantas event

South Pacific Pictures television drama “Outrageous Fortune” dominated New Zealand’s Qantas Film and Television Awards for the second year in a row.

The blue collar drama took eight television prizes at awards on Saturday beating the five it won in 1997.

The show, about a family with crim connections trying to go straight, took the best drama and four best acting awards.

The show – which screens on TV3 and whose format SPP has sold on – also won best script, and editing in a comedy or drama.

The film section was dominated by Desert Road Productions Out of the Blue the true story of David Gray’s 1990 massacre in small town Aramoana.

Matthew Sutherland and Karl Urban picked up the awards for best actor and supporting actor for their roles in the movie.

Also best screenplay, cinematography and editing.

Oscar nominated New Zealand director Taika Waititi won best director for his “Eagle Versus Shark” starring “Flight of The Conchords'” Jermaine Clement.

The top film actress awards went to Second-Hand Wedding, with Geraldine Brophy receiving the award for best actress and Holly Shanahan winning best supporting actress.

TVNZ’s “One News” took the best news award.

Current affairs host Mark Sainsbury won in the best news or current affairs presenter category.

Satirical Show Eating Media Lunch picked up the gong for best comedy programme.

“Sensing Murder,” a series that used mediums to help uncover detail of cold cases, won best reality series.

Jason Gunn won best entertainment presenter for his role fronting the New Zealand version of “Dancing With The Stars.”

Qantas Film and Television Award won kudos after troubled history for kiwi entertainment awards.

TV networks have sought more promotional cache from awards while Directors Guild has maintained industry control over judging.

Bodies combined this year with a separate ceremony for craft awards held the previous day.
