A new wave of layoffs have begun at NBC Universal — with more expected to come.
According to insiders, NBC’s sales team and news division was hit. One report noted that 30 sales staffers already had been informed of their departures earlier this week.
Layoffs have been expected, as NBC Universal topper Jeff Zucker sent a memo to division heads last month asking for 3 percent cuts across the board.
Staff reductions were expected to make up part of that $500 million cut.
NBC isn’t the only conglom to make budget trims as the country battles with a recession. Disney ordered production cuts on all of its ABC Studios series, while layoffs are expected shortly at other congloms (including Viacom).
One genre, daytime sudsers, have been hit especially hard, with expensive stars being dropped and others having to take big pay cuts.
Belt tightening also comes as the networks brace for a weak scatter advertising market.
