Global entertainment powerhouse Endemol is entering a new playing field.
The company will produce and distrib sports content, including covering live events, factual and sports entertainment programming plus magazine shows.
At this stage, there are no plans to bid for sports rights.
Endemol Sport will be led by two former IMG execs, Lawrence Duffy and Gregg Oldfield, who will be joint managing directors. They will be responsible for building a worldwide, multimedia sports business.
Additionally, Endemol aims to develop and manage sports channels across TV and digital media platforms. These include joint ventures and consortium partnerships with networks and sports channels.
The move to set up Endemol Sport follows the launch of soccer channel Eredivisie Live in the Netherlands in August and comes as new CEO Ynon Kreiz attempts to reposition the company.
He has already signaled his intention to beef up Endemol’s distribution and digital activities, and give more prominence to scripted shows as opposed to the nonscripted formats the Dutch-based company is famous for.
“This represents a significant opportunity for Endemol,” Kreiz says. “By further exploiting our global platform, we are now aiming to become a leading international player in sports media.”
Endemol Sport will be based in London, with Duffy and Oldfield coming onboard Jan. 1.
