‘Desperate Housewives’: Ask and you shall receive

When last we left Wisteria Lane, the ladies’ lives had been fast-forwarded five years. If you’re a fan of “Desperate Housewives,” I’m sure you have questions.

Well, here’s your chance to ask them. I will be having lunch with “Housewives” boss Marc Cherry on Sept. 20, where I will present him with the best questions submitted. On Monday, Sept. 22 I will post the answers.

DhAnything you’re curious about? Have a query about one of the stars? Just hit the comment button below and ask. The person who submits the question Marc deems the most interesting will receive season 4 of “DH” on DVD. I’ll even see if I can persuade Marc to sign it for you.

And SoapNet.com has generously offered to award some other lucky participants t-shirts emblazoned with “My Life is So Like TV.”

In the meantime, you can catch up on “Housewives’ gossip or refresh your memory on last season’s episodes at the re-launched SoapNet.com. The site covers 42 shows including “90210,” “Gossip Girl,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Dirty Sexy Money,” “Weeds” and more.

Check back for future Q&A opportunites for “Ugly Betty” and “Mad Men.” I’m also working on “Lost” and “Friday Night Lights.”

Lunch has been rescheduled for Saturday! Answers will be posted Monday. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

  9. Renato says:

    Mr. Cherry,
you run a fantastic show, and everything about it is brilliant. But is there anything YOU regret about the series, some character or storyline that now just doesn’t work for you? If you could go back in time and change something, what would it be and why?

  15. Tomass says:

    Hey Marc Cherry !
I would appreciate Lynette and Gabrielle be on the center of a season ! Because the four ladies were for the Season 1 but Susan was more for that Season and a bit for the Season 4, Bree for the Season 2, the Season 3, and a bit for the Season 4 ! And apparently, Edie is for Season 5, what is really good ! So, I hope that Lynette and Gaby will have their Season too… ! ^^ Thanks !

  16. Kathy says:

Thank you Julie and Karin. You have redeemed yourselves. I’ll be sure Marc sees your video.

  17. Stephanie says:

    Mr. Marc Cherry,
I absolutely obsess over your juicy dramedy and couldn’t get any more ‘desperate.’ I’ve always wondered though, if you could write yourself in as a neighbor who would you want to move in next to and what neighborly duties would you partake in? Or perhaps, what havoc would you like to cause to the Lane? Gossip and poker? Or murder and blackmail? Also, what housewife, or husband, would you like to be the friendliest with?
    Thanks for your time.

  18. OKAY
Made some edits — here’s the new video Kathy!

  19. Stefano says:

Hi Marc, I’m Obsessed With DH And I Have One Only Question: From Season 3 we had 2 events: A Hostage Situation and a Tornado ¿Did You Have Decided The Next Event?
I’m From Chile, Thanks For The Opportunity

  20. Juliette says:

Since 5 years have passed, the characters are the same, but not the same… how did you redefine their new selves ? Did you and the writers use your knowledge of the strengths of the actresses and their characters ? Do you write them differently ?

  21. Alexander Bond says:

Mr. Marc Cherry, after four sensational seasons, do you feel that “Desperate Housewives” has come to represent something significant for woman all over the world? The show has dealt with issues such as Katherine’s personal triumph over adversity and even Bree’s struggle to maintain the perfect household.
Do you feel that you have, not only entertained a large audience, but also taught woman how to maintain an enduring confidence? Your show certainly has become memorable television, and will remain a symbol of this new millennium.

  22. Simon says:

As the show progresses, we are obviously moving further and further away from the events of Mary Alice’s suicide. Naturally she is less in the minds of the characters, and stylistically her narration is less personal (with no more references to “my friends”, for example.) But does the character still represent the anchor of the show to you, as a writer and the show’s creator? We still enjoy appearances of Brenda Strong, even if they are incidental (such as Mary Alice babysitting baby Dylan in flashback) – do you make a conscious effort to refer back to the character?

  23. Simon says:

What material was planned for the second half of the fourth season, had the writers’ strike not occurred? Did you manage to represent all the planned storylines, even if only briefly (such as Lynette finding faith in “Sunday”, or can you think of arcs that had to be scrapped entirely? Similarly, how would the season’s mystery have been expanded? This question can also apply to season three, with the mystery’s arc shortened because of Marcia Cross’ maternity leave.

  24. Renato says:

    (I know I’m asking a lot of questions, but…)
    Mr. Cherry,
“Desperate Housewives” features several openly homosexual male characters, like Andrew Van De Kamp, Justin and the Hunter/McDermott couple. Do you ever plan to follow in the lead of shows like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “The O.C.” and introduce lesbian or bisexual characters on your show?

  25. Renato says:

    Mr. Cherry,
you’re the creator and executive producer of a brilliant show. If you could be the head of another already existing TV show, what would it be, and why?

  26. Julie B says:

    Marc Cherry,
You have said before that your childhood was the inspiration for Lynette and her family and that you teenage life was your inspiration for Bree and her family. I am just curious as to what your inspiration was for Gabrielle, Edie, and Susan and their stories.

  27. Natalie says:

Dave Williams is obviously on Wisteria Lane for a reason, he must be going after a specific person. Who is in danger?

  28. Karin & Julie says:

    AH Kathy!
    Sincere apologies-
Clearly working on videos in the middle of the night is not a good idea!
    We could re-record…?
THanks for considering us! Even if we are confused with the masculine/feminine name determination…haha

  29. Renato says:

    Mr. Cherry,
Wisteria Lane is probably the deadliest street on current primetime television. You keep saying that Susan, Lynette, Bree and Gabrielle are the only safe characters on the show. Well, hypothetically, if one of them were to die, to shake things up, who would you kill off?

  30. Renato says:

    Mr. Cherry,
there are some rumours about a show called “Vicious Cheerleaders”, that you will be producing after “Desperate Housewives” ends. Can you confirm that, and if so, give us more detail, please?

  31. Renato says:

Mr. Cherry, “Desperate Housewives” is the best thing that’s ever hit television. My question is: do you ever plan on bringing back characters like Paul, Zach, Betty and Felicia, because I thought they were brilliant, and I’m not the only one who thinks that way, and if so, approximately when?

  32. Kathy says:

    Julie and Karin,
The video question is very creative but I’m insulted that you called me a guy,,, twice! I will try not to hold that against you when Marc and I are determining the prize winners.

  33. Hi Marc!
So we decided to be creative and make OUR question to you in the format of a short video…

  34. Andres M. Vilhjalmsson says:

I am a huge fan, been watching DH since the first episode and will continue to watch till the very end. I have been wondering though, why is Edie so underused, she has so much pontential, yet she only has a line or two in many of the fourth season episodes.. Why don’t you explore the character instead of making her this one dimensional character that she become in the fourth season. I know she is not one of the main 4 housewives, but the husbands even get more screentime than she does. This has been discussed on many fan forums and I have always wondered if you know how popular Edie really is?.. Edie needs a storyline!

  35. Mariam M.T. says:

    Hi Marc,
Do you plan on creating a character to be played by yourself on the show? (even a minor role in the last season of the show)
p.s. James Denton is great on the show; please don’t get rid of him.

  36. Jose Carlos says:

Hi Marc! I´m a hugeeeee fan of the show!
I´ve always wanted to ask you something …
If you were a character on the show, which housewife do you think you could be friends with? who do you think of the 5 (now 6) ladies could end up being one of your best friends and why?
thank you for such an amazing show!
    hugs from Lima-Peru!

  37. Karin says:

Ok so seeing as I’m a journalism student .. I couldn’t just stop at when question!
So here are a few more:
If you could use only one word to describe the wonderful ladies of Wisteria Lane .. (Teri, Marcia, Felicity, Eva, Dana & Nicolette) what would they be?
And… will we ever see the return of Felicia Tilman? I thought Harriet Samson Harris was brilliant.

  38. Karin Mc. says:

    Hi Marc!
Like the other individuals responding here, I too am a devout fan of the show — and here’s my question for you:
I know many creators of hit long-running t.v shows already have the ending scene of the series etched into their brain. You’ve said publicly before that you will be ending DH after 7 seasons. So my question for you is… do you have the series ending already stored in your mind? Or will you just have to wait and see where the wind takes you…
And on a personal note — I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation for creating a show that allows me to escape my hectic week for 1hr every Sunday!

  39. Kevin Viado says:

    Hey Marc Cherry!
Where did the story/mystery of Katherine and Mary Alice come from or who came up with the ideas?
How come the explanation of Dylan’s missing memory wasn’t on the show? Or the man trying to grab her?
Where was the catfight between Lee and Katherine, I thought it was going to be on the dvd? I remember in a magazine interview it was going to be on dvd.
    Kevin Viado

  40. Ruthie says:

Is the creepy neighbor Art ever going to come back to the Lane? It seemed like SO much more could have happened with that storyline/arc…it just seemed to leave me hanging…did the actor not work out or something?

  41. Mike says:

I’d like to know why Bree was unable to forgive Orson for hitting Mike with his car unless he turned himself over to the police when in the first season we saw that she was more than willing to cover for Andrew when he hit Mama Solis with his car.

  42. Giuliano says:

I just want to know who will die in the Season 5 ?

  43. Anthony says:

As your show is a serialized drama, do you ever design an episode to appeal to casual viewers who can’t commit to a full season run? If so, what methods do you use to achieve this aim?

  44. Meaghan Edwards says:

I am a huge DH fan — it’s my favorite show. As “Gablos” (Carlos/Gabrielle) are my favorite couple, I have had some questions on in my mind.
Of all the male characters, why was it that it was Carlos who was chosen to be the one to become blind? In an odd sort of way, I’m glad that Carlos was chosen as Ricardo plays that huge change in his and Gaby’s life wonderfully.
Will there be any chance of Gabrielle’s step father coming back to cause drama? Or her mother? I would love to see her (and maybe Carlos) involved in a mystery.

  45. Samuel Roberts says:

Marc, I find the strangest scenes in the show to be between the women themselves- the way they interact with each other is completely different from the way they engage with the other characters. Is this observational?

  46. Seth says:

I think one of the reasons that the actresses don’t get much deserved nominations or wins is because you don’t showcase one actress at a time — I know with a show with such a large cast — would it be possible to give some great scenes and more air time in one episode to one or two actresses like Marcia Cross and Teri Hatcher, etc so that they have at least a chance at award season

  47. Sarah says:

I wish that Andrew, who is one great, underused actor on the show, would have a more prominent role in the show — are there any big plans this season for him?

  48. Jake says:

I’m so glad that you offered us this opportunity because truthfully I have never been so angry or betrayed by a series in my life with the DH finale.
This question is probably not something that Marc can answer but will he be back in full capacity? I do like the addition of gale harold but at the expense of James Denton is annoying. Does he really have to end it after next year? I feel like we are going to be going through another upheaval again because of his plans to go before the series began and then end it. Can’t we get a little stability? I was happy with the finale but so annoyed by the last five minutes that I at the time I never wanted to see the show again.

  49. Scheherazade says:

    Thank you for this opportunity.
Actually I have lots of TV industry questions, but I thought I’d go for a more relaxed one this time:
Mr. Cherry, if you had the opportunity (as you do now with Ms. Lyford) to have lunch with one character of your show, who would you pick and why?
    Thank you!

  50. Kate says:

Yay what a great opportunity. For Marc, there are two questions I am dying to ask, sorry!:
    1) With the addition of the wonderful Gail O’Grady this season is there a tentative plan to introduce a new character every single season?
    2) What made you want to fast forward the show at a point in all the storylines when it would have been so simple to stay at the current time (seeing Susan and Mike deal with baby and post-rehab more, Gaby evolving into a more caring individual through Carlos’ new blindness, etc.)?
**Also, with the show skipping ahead, this means that some of the housewives’ children (i.e. Julie, Andrew and Danielle) will be on their own more. Will they still be included in storylines or if they’re not living with their parents on Wisteria Lane will they take more backseat roles to new characters?
