TORONTO — CTV has partnered with Vancouver’s Omni Film Prods. and Fox Television Studios to produce sci-fi series “Defying Gravity.” Exec produced by creator and writer-producer James Parriott (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Ugly Betty”), Michael Edelstein (“Desperate Housewives”) and Omni’s Brian Hamilton and Michael Chechik, the series stars Ron Livingston (“Band of Brothers”) with casting now under way for a Canadian female lead. Ron French (“Battlestar Galactica”) will produce.
“Defying Gravity” will air on CTV and CTV-owned sci-fi channel Space, on BBC in the U.K. and ProSieben in Germany. Fox TV Studios will shop it to American nets once it’s completed. Production of 13 one-hour episodes begins in Vancouver, B.C., early next year, with Canuck TV director David Straiton (“House”) helming the series opener.
The sci-fi relationship drama follows four male and four female astronauts on a six-year deep-space mission who soon realize their assignment is not as straightforward as they first thought.
