Broadcaster hits subscriber milestone
JOHANNESBURG — Pan-African satcaster MultiChoice has crossed the 2 million subscriber mark — a confidence booster for the broadcaster as it prepares to take on new pay TV operators in the South African market this year.
Johannesburg-based MultiChoice, which has had a monopoly in the South African market for two decades, said Friday that its combined subscriber base in South Africa and the rest of Africa had now reached 2 million. In South Africa alone its sub count stood at just under 1.5 million DStv subscribers.
“Over the years we have been working hard to enhance and refine our product offering to make DStv a world-class platform for television entertainment,” said MultiChoice South Africa chief exec Nolo Letele. “Our first milestone came in 2005, when we registered the 1 millionth DStv subscriber in South Africa, and we are pleased that we have managed to double this number across the continent.”
