Author DiCamillo overwhelmed by starry screening

HOLLYWOOD — Moppets and moguls donned floppy pink mouse ears Sunday afternoon at the Hollywood Palladium to celebrate the preem of Universal’s feature toon “The Tale of Despereaux.”

Book author Kate DiCamillo admitted being “a bit overwhelmed.”

“At one point I went to the bathroom,” she said, “and all these kids were coming towards me with mouse ears. I got a little vertigo, you know?”

Meanwhile, Matthew Broderick, the voice of the pic’s heroic mouse, was mostly ignored by tykes, who instead flocked to have their photo taken with a larger-than-life Despereaux.

Sigourney Weaver said it was DiCamillo’s book and scripter Gary Ross who drew her to the project. “I would do anything with Gary Ross,” she said.

Ross, meanwhile, said he’d written the part for her. “I’ve been a friend of hers since ‘Dave.’ It’s kind of a ‘Dave’ reunion because we’ve got Kevin Kline and Frank Langella and her,” Ross explained.
