Wachowski blockbuster zooms into L.A.
Before rolling into theaters May 9, “Speed Racer” made a pit stop at the Nokia Theater on Saturday for a downtown L.A. premiere.
Preem of the family actioner from the Wachowskis and Joel Silver, based on the iconic Japanese toon series of the ’60s, attracted more than 5,000 guests.
Attendees included 1,700 kids from various orgs around Los Angeles, including Challengers Boys and Girls Clubs, Catholic Big Brothers and Sisters and Covenant House, who cheered loudly at various scenes.
“You can’t fake that kind of response,” Silver said. “It was the best reaction we could have ever gotten.”
Silver spent more than a decade trying to get “Speed Racer” to the finish line and says he’s now happy for the wait because of the film’s lavish special f/x. “The technology caught up with the movie,” he said.
Given the pic’s car theme, after-party was held on the roof of a parking garage, complete with a go-kart track and Hot Wheels-sponsored activities.
Enjoying the festivities were pic’s stars Christina Ricci, Emile Hirsch, Susan Sarandon, John Goodman and Matthew Fox as well as guests J.J. Abrams and Zack Snyder.
