Annual benefit raises funds for good cause

Despite the night’s serious mission of raising money for Alzheimer’s, stars urged guests to “put on a happy face,” at the 16th annual Night at Sardi’s benefit March 5.

Dick Van Dyke brought the BevHilton crowd to its feet when he performed the “Bye Bye Birdie” classic with composer Charles Strouse. But it was Van Dyke who said he was impressed by the evening’s other performers like Jason Alexander, Kristen Bell, Vanessa Williams and Steven Weber.

“They were as good as anything I’ve ever heard,” he said. “They could take that one on the road — it was that good.”

On a more serious note, “Boston Legal” stars Candice Bergen, John Larroquette and William Shatner presented the Abe Burrows Entertainment Award to the show’s producers David E. Kelley and Bill D’Elia.

“Tonight the ones we truly celebrate are the ones in the trenches who work every day to find a cure,” Kelley said.
