London may not be known for its balmy Mediterranean weather but Monday’s world premiere of “Mamma Mia!” at the Odeon, Leicester Square, was a truly summery affair.
Universal pulled out all the stops to bring the Abba musical’s cheerful Greek island vibe to Blighty.
Cast including Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Julie Walters, Dominic Cooper, Amanda Seyfried and Stellan Skarsgard trotted down a blue carpet surrounded by lemon trees, bougainvilleas and an Orthodox-style Greek church erected especially in Leicester Square for the night.
“I don’t know what you did last summer but I was on a Greek island with Darcy and 007,” smugly remarked producer Judy Craymer during the on-stage intro.
Not to be outdone by the likes of Streep, Firth and Brosnan, original Abba member and producer Bjorn Ulvaeus stepped out of his limo in a silver suit. Also on hand to tubthump were producers Benny Andersson (Abba), Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson and helmer Phyllida Lloyd.
