Awards handed out at gala dinner in Beverly Hills

“When I got a call from the Israeli film group I was very excited. I thought they had a part for me in a movie,” quipped honoree Kirk Douglas at the 23rd annual Israel Film Festival gala on June 11.

The kudos kicked off its celebration of Israel’s 60th anniversary at the BevHilton by honoring the man who has been making movies longer than Israel has been a state.

Other award recipients included ICM topper Jeffrey Berg, veteran Israeli filmmaker Menahem Golan, and father-and-son duo Carl and Rob Reiner.

When accepting his award, Carl Reiner brought his Borscht Belt shtick to Beverly Hills. His critique of the evening? “You know the phrase ‘first you eat, then you talk…,’ ” he said before adding, “I’m the silliest 86-year-old person in the world.”

As the crowd, which included Jeff Goldblum, Jon Voight, Gil Gates, Avi Lerner and Consul General of Israel Jacob Dayan, headed out to the valet, mistress of ceremonies Lainie Kazan wished everyone a “lila tov” (good night in Hebrew).
