Broadcaster to produce 'Caminho'

Brazil’s TV Globo, Latin America’s biggest broadcaster, is producing the $80 million “Caminho das Indias,” one of the most expensive telenovelas ever made.

It also is bowing its first original productions for two of its key international channels, “Ca Estamos” for TV Globo Portugal and “Revista Africa” for Globo TV Intl.’s African service.

“Caminho” is written by Gloria Perez, the scribe behind two of TV Globo’s highest-profile fiction series on the international market, “Amazonia” and “The Clone.”

Turning on a love story between a Brazilian and an Indian, “Caminho” is shooting in India after a September start in Brazil before moving to Dubai, Globo TV Intl. head of sales Raphael Correa said at Mipcom on Wednesday. TV Globo has also constructed a backlot in Brazil recreating the Indian setting.

Correa hopes international sales will help the hugely expensive “Caminho” turn a profit. Telenovela will air on TV Globo beginning in January.

Given that TV Globo’s telenovelas can punch up to 65% audience share — the record set by “A Favorita” in August — and that the broadcaster itself commands the lion’s share of Brazil’s huge TV ad spend, a first half 5.6 billion reais ($3.3 billion), that’s no tall order.

Produced for the one-year-old TV Globo Portugal, a premium pay TV channel on TV Cabo, “Ca” is a half-hour, weekly primetime culture magazine.

“Revista,” presented on Globo TV Intl.’s African feed, is a local talent contest.

Globo’s move into local production coincides with its creation of a Board of Intl. Production, headed by Globo’s international director Guilherme Bokel.

“We want to work with partners abroad on customized local versions of our library properties,” Bokel said at Cannes.

TV Globo’s initial focus for international co-production will be Latin America, Spain, Portugal and the U.S., he added.

Globo also announced sales on telenovela “Little Missy,” set in the 19th century, to Turkey’s Kanal 1 and Israel’s Hot.
