Telemundo shows to air in Mexico

Trio to bow on Televisa

NBC Universal’s Spanish-language web Telemundo gets its first crack at the Mexican market today when three of its hit shows bow on a web owned by Mexican conglom Televisa.

The breakthrough comes under the pair’s recently announced content-sharing deal.

Soaps “Victoria” and “El cuerpo del deseo” will join episodic drama “Decisiones” on Televisa’s channel 9.

“This affirms our original content strategy, and it represents a sort of coming of age for Telemundo and a tribute from one of the largest Spanish-language networks in the world,” said Telemundo rep Alfredo Richard.

Creating awareness in the Mexican market bolsters a cross-border dynamic, which Telemundo hopes will benefit it Stateside.

The content-sharing agreement also included the creation of a new cable channel to appear on Televisa partners Sky and Cablevision beginning in September or October, according to Richard.

Telemundo inked the deal last month after it became clear that the Mexican government would not give a license to a third and, importantly, foreign TV network.

This marked a big win for Televisa, which is giving channel 9 a general overhaul, making waves for the introduction of the Telemundo content.

The new shows debut under the shadow of the April 29 trial in Los Angeles federal court in which Televisa hopes to break its long-term output deal with Univision, the leading Spanish-language web Stateside.

This would allow Televisa to bow a web of its own in the U.S. or theoretically team up with the much-smaller Telemundo, Univision’s main competitor.
