Morton takes helm of ‘Unloved’

Actress makes TV directorial debut

British actress Samantha Morton is making her TV directorial debut with “The Unloved,” about a girl growing up in a children’s home, for U.K. broadcaster Channel 4.

Written by Morton and Tony Grisoni (“Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” “In This World”), the telepic has come out of Channel 4’s first-look development deal with Revolution Films.

“I am thrilled to be making my first film with Channel 4, who have constantly pushed boundaries and enabled people like me to have a voice,” said Morton. “I hope this film can help make a difference to the young people that see it.”

Morton, who spent time in homeless shelters as a child, worked with Grisoni on the script that gives a child’s eye view of the U.K.’s government-run care system for orphans and children in danger.

“The Unloved” will be produced by Kate Ogborn, who worked with Morton on the 1997 pic “Under the Skin.” EM Media has also invested in the production through the European Regional Development Fund.

Due to start filming in Morton’s home town of Nottingham, in the Midlands, this fall, the drama will air on Channel 4 next year.

Revolution is also producing “Red Riding” for Channel 4, a trilogy adapted by Grisoni from David Peace’s quartet of crime novels set in Yorkshire in the 1970s and early 1980s (Daily Variety, July 8).
