Former CAA reality chief bringing clients along
Former CAA reality chief Michael Camacho is joining UTA and will bring many of his high-profile clients with him.In a move that dramatically shifts the balance of power in the unscripted business, Camacho has been named a partner and will head UTA’s alternative TV department. Hiring comes about six months after UTA lured Fox reality exec Kary McHoul to the agency to serve as co-head of alternative TV with Brett Hansen. It also follows Camacho’s sudden departure from CAA over the weekend. In addition to snagging Camacho, UTA is in talks with CAA reality agent Joe LaBracio about joining the tenpercentery. While UTA was already a player in the reality game, Camacho’s client list and connections will help the tenpercentery make a strong claim that it now is the dominant agency in the unscripted space. Among those headed to UTA with Camacho are Allison Grodner (“Big Brother”), Mike Fleiss (“The Bachelor”), Cris Abrego (“Flavor of Love”), Jay Blumenfeld and Tony Marsh, Tom Forman (“Kid Nation”), R.J. Cutler, David Hurwitz, Jason Carbone, Lisa Levenson (“The Bachelor”), Anthony Dominici, Laurie Girion, Mike Nichols and Scott Einziger. “I spent the first 15 years of my career organizing the premier non-fiction talent list in the business,” Camacho told Daily Variety. “I’m looking forward to growing those clients into all the different businesses they’re interested in, and UTA seemed the perfect place to do that.” UTA board member Peter Benedek said the tenpercentery admired Camacho’s “vision and professionalism. He is the consummate agent in the space.” Warner Bros. TV Group prexy Bruce Rosenblum said Camacho and his clients “have been successful partners with us, and we look forward to working with him in this new stage of his career.” Camacho’s sudden departure from CAA over the weekend shocked the unscripted world, given Camacho’s close association with CAA and his standing within the reality community. Agent led the team that brokered the deal for Discovery Communications’ Oprah Winfrey Network. There have been allegations that Camacho might have sought an exec position with Winfrey, but others familiar with what happened insist the situation has been completely mischaracterized. Camacho will become UTA’s 20th partner.
