Network may permanently freeze reality show
Fox unveiled a summer schedule Monday heavy on original franchises — but light on women ruling the world.
Net’s long-awaited reality skein “When Women Rule the World” will remain long awaited, as the net has decided not to air it this summer as planned. It’s now unclear whether “Women” — which was produced originally for last fall, then pushed to spring and then to summer — will actually ever air on Fox.
Fox’s Preston Beckman, exec VP of strategic program planning and research, said the net decided to stick with firstrun episodes of known performers.
“The schedule that we are airing this summer is going to be more profitable for us, and that’s important,” he said.
Summer sked begins with a two-hour “So You Think You Can Dance” seg on Thursday, May 22; two-hour episodes continue until June 12, when new “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” segs air at 8, leading into “Dance” at 9.
Tuesdays open on May 27 with new “The Moment of Truth” episodes at 8 p.m., followed by continuing “Hell’s Kitchen” segs (which actually have already launched) at 9.
On May 28, the Wednesday edition of “Dance” bows; those episodes will continue as two-hour shows throughout the summer.
As for Mondays, “Bones” and “House” will continue, with repeats. Fox will also run theatricals on Fridays and keep its Saturday night lineup intact.
Sundays will also continue with the net’s usual “The Simpsons”/”King of the Hill”/”Family Guy”/”American Dad” foursome from 8 to 10 p.m., with gamer “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” airing at 7.
“We’ve been No. 1 the last two summers and have two very successful tentpoles in ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ and ‘Hell’s Kitchen,’ ” Beckman said. ” ‘The Moment of Truth’ numbers speak for themselves, so we wanted to keep it on all summer. We didn’t feel the need to go out there and add a lot of new product to our schedule.”
Beckman said the net is still figuring out its counterprogramming plans opposite NBC’s Summer Olympics in August.
“We’ll get a better sense of the fall first, then we’ll revisit what our plans are for the Olympics,” he said.
“When Women Rule the World,” from Rocket Science Laboratories, revolves around a group of women on a remote island who are asked to build a new society — and lord over a group of men.
