Exec spent more than 30 years at network

Former ABC-TV vice president Charles M. Smith, Jr., died Feb. 15 in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. He was 85.

Smith, Jr. spent more than three decades at ABC Television, serving as vice president of ABC Broadcast Group at the time of his retirement in 1986.

Irwin Weiner, former senior vice president of ABC News and Sports, said, “Charlie was always a big supporter of Sports and Roone Arledge. He was a mentor to many of us and a man, when the history of ABC Sports is written, who should not be forgotten.”

Smith also served as treasurer of Strauss Broadcasting group for several years in the 1960s.

In addition to his wife of 54 years, Beatrice, he is survived by son Robert, an audio engineer; Brian, a TV station exec; Michael, a news producer; Lisa; a TV producer; grandchildren Bridget, Brian Thomas, Sean, Robert Terence, Jr. and Christine, a Sony Pictures TV exec; and a brother.
