Niemann to head licensing unit for DFL

BERLIN — Robert Niemann, general manager of Sony Pictures Television Intl. Networks Germany, is ankling in August to head a new international licensing division for the German Football League (DFL).

Niemann has been at SPTI Networks Germany since 2005 and has overseen the expansion of Sony’s pay TV web AXN in Germany, Austria and German-speaking Switzerland.

Last summer SPTI Networks Germany also launched anime channel Animax.

Ross Hair, SPTI senior VP of international networks, praised Niemann’s work, saying he “successfully developed and expanded our channel brands AXN and Animax and established them as major fixtures in Germany’s cable, satellite and IPTV markets. He made a significant contribution to our corporate development in the German market.”

Sony has not yet appointed a new general manager for Germany.

At the DFL, Niemann will head a new subsidiary set up to market international TV rights, branded licenses and platforms.

DFL chief exec Christian Seifert said Niemann’s experience in marketing channel brands to international TV and advertising partners made him ideally qualified for the post.
