Disney Channel has shot straight to the top of Spain’s digital terrestrial and pay TV channel chart after just one month as a free-to-air DTT service.
Bowing July 1, the Disney Channel took a 5.6% share of what Spain calls its “theme” channel audience in July, registering 1.7 million viewers daily. It beat kids feed Clan TVE (5%) and Antena.neox (4.2%), both also DTT channels.
Results confirm the domination of kids’ feeds: Antena 3 TV’s Antena.neox has a strong youth-children’s program element but also shows European Champions soccer matches and films in a Sundance Night slot.
Disney Channel scored a 0.7% share of total TV auds in Spain over July.
The Mouse House’s auds were no doubt hiked by Spain’s school summer vacation.
“The potential for Disney Channel is highly impressive given that only 30%-35% of Spanish households view DTT,” said Eduardo Garcia Matilla, prexy of aud research company Multimedia Corp. “Disney could improve significantly by the time of Spain’s analog switch-off in 2010.”
Spain’s theme channels together registered a record share of 14.1%, not much below July shares for the country’s top three terrestrial broadcasters, Telecinco (17.8%), TVE-1 (16.6%) and Antena 3 TV (16%).
