Exec new head of emerging-networks group

Discovery Communications has appointed its president of Discovery Studios Clark Bunting to the post of president of the newly created emerging-networks group.

Succeeding Bunting as president of Discovery Studios is Carole Tomko cq, who adds the new role to her existing job of general manager of Discovery Health Channel, Fit TV and Discovery Kids Channel.

Bunting’s new job will put him in charge of the programming, marketing, scheduling, development and online efforts of the Science Channel, ID (Investigation Discovery) and the Military Channel.

“We wanted a big gun…to fully unlock the potential” of the three networks, said David Zaslav cq, CEO of Discovery Communications, referring to Bunting’s work in developing such networks in the past as Travel Channel, Discovery Health and Discovery Home.

Earlier in his 22-year career at Discovery, Bunting launched such successful series as “American Chopper,” “Mythbusters” and “Monster Garage” during his tenure as executive VP and general manager of Discovery.

Tomko’s job at Discovery Studios will be to ride herd on more than 200 hours of original content this year, which the company will designate across a number of networks owned by Discovery. Tomko joined Discovery in 1990 as an executive producer for Discovery Channel and TLC. In 1996, she shifted over to Discovery’s Animal Planet, rising to VP of production and development.
