Philanthropist to endow costume design chair

Philanthropist and publisher David C. Copley will bestow $6 million to the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television.

Funds will endow the David C. Copley Chair for the Study of Costume Design and the Center for the Study of Costume Design, which will also bear his name.

UCLA will have a renowned international designer and scholar hold the chair for the study of costume design, while the center will look to further scholarships in the realm of costume design through research, coursework and a special program that will feature leading professionals as visiting faculty.

“The artistry of costume designers has long been a vital part of storytelling in the cinematic and performing arts and deserves significant scholarly attention from a great educational institution such as UCLA,” said Copley, who is publisher of the San Diego Union-Tribune and CEO of its parent company Copley Press.
