Canada’s Sphere circles Hollywood

Production company signs with APA

MONTREAL — Canuck production company Sphere Media Plus has signed with APA Talent and Literary Agency for representation with the aim of selling rights to develop English adaptations of Sphere French-language hits in Hollywood.

Sphere produces “Sophie,” which is an English adaptation of the popular French Quebec comedy series “Les hauts et les bas de Sophie Paquin.”

“Sophie” airs on pubcaster CBC in Canada and will preem in the U.S. on ABC Family in early 2009.

Sphere has a number of Quebec hits, including “Annie et ses hommes” and “Le monde de Charlotte.”

“We believe that there’s a strong demand in the U.S. marketplace for our offerings,” said Sphere president Jocelyn Deschenes. “I am confident that we are going to produce some great properties together.”

Sphere shows air on Radio-Canada and TVA in French Canada, on France 2 and TV5 Monde internationally, and on CBC. Sphere also produced “Rumours,” an English adaptation of its French-language Radio-Canada comedy “Rumeurs.” “Rumours” aired on CBC last year.
