Portuguese firm to boost agency's soccer roster

CAA Sports has engineered a global partnership with the Lisbon-based sports-management company Gestifute to represent soccer players and coaches.

Gestifute’s clients include Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo, the soccer player of the year in 2007 and 2008, and coach of the year Jose Mourinho.

As indicated by the Gestifute pact, CAA Sports is continuing its efforts with regard to soccer stars. It made a splash in this arena early last year with the agency’s brokering of the deal that brought superstar David Beckham from Britain to Los Angeles as the star player for the L.A. Galaxy. CAA lined up a number of worldwide endorsement deals for Beckham and for other European soccer stars.

CAA Sports has branched out beyond athlete representation, serving as adviser to Joe Roth, former studio head of Walt Disney, 20th Century Fox and Revolution, in his purchase of a Major League Soccer expansion team in Seattle.

Gestifute will work with CAA Sports to create global opportunities for their clients in, as CAA puts it, “endorsements, speaking engagements, licensing and merchandising, publishing, film, television, videogames and the Internet.”

“With CAA,” said Luis Correia, director of Gestifute, “our clients will benefit from an unmatched spectrum of services and expertise that capitalizes on the global scale of soccer.”
