Mark Burnett is partnering with the owners of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings to develop a reality series showcasing the team’s players, coaches, management and operational personnel as they attempt to work their way back to the top of the league.
A co-production of Mark Burnett Prods. and Maloof Television (Spike TV’s “Bullrun,” E!’s “Living Lohan”), “Rebuilding the Kingdom” will focus on the moribund Kings basketball franchise as it rebuilds and restructures.
Burnett will serve as exec producer, as will Maloof TV’s Phil Maloof and Andrew Jameson.
Owned by the Maloof family, the Kings came whisper close to claiming the pro hoops league championship in 2002 with one of the more exciting offensive styles in NBA history; now the Kings are a .500 team looking to return to elite status.
Reality skein will showcase not just the young players looking to improve but also, for example, the challenges faced by the franchise’s marketing staffers as they try to fill 17,000-seat Arco Arena during a rebuilding year.
In addition to its TV projects, the Maloofs’ production company is also at work on several films, including a docu focused on New York’s elite Rucker Park pickup basketball scene.
