‘SNL’ to receive Spanish makeover

Globomedia buys format rights for Spain

Spanish TV producer Globomedia has inked with Sogecable’s broadcaster Cuatro to produce a Spanish adaptation of NBC’s late-night comedy show “Saturday Night Live.”

The still-unnamed local version will bow on Cuatro in primetime in the first quarter of 2009, but not necessarily on a Saturday night.

The remake is “going to be pretty much like the original version, which is a basis we’re very happy with,” said Fernando Jerez, Cuatro programming director. “The goal is to make it recognizable with a humor that Spanish audiences can understand.”

The show will star popular TV comics Eva Hache (“Noche Hache”), Edu Soto (“Buenafuente”), Yolanda Ramos (“Homo Zapping”), Gorka Otxoa (“A Matter of Sex”) and Secun de la Rosa (“Aida”).

Under vet Spanish casting director Luis San Narciso (“Volver,” “The Sea Inside”), the program will also attempt to discover young talent.

Globomedia has a long history of producing comedic TV content, such as stand-up show “El Club de la comedia,” which discovered many of today’s leading Spanish TV presenters and comedians.

Along with Barcelona-based producer Mediapro, Globomedia is part of film and TV giant Imagina Media Audiovisual, the leading shareholder at nationwide free-to-air broadcaster La Sexta.

Spanish TV audiences have become more familiar with “SNL” since Sogecable premium channel Canal Plus began to broadcast the original version of the show last month.

It’s the second European redo of “SNL.” In 2003 production house FactBased Communications took Italian TV distribution rights to “SNL,” which it adapted for Telecom Italia’s free-to-air channel La7.
