AB picks up animated series ‘Ariol’

Sales co. also takes 'Night Birds'

PARIS — Gallic shingle AB Intl. Distribution has picked up worldwide rights to 26 episodes of the animated series “Ariol,” adapted from the popular children comic strip created by Emmanuel Guibert and Marc Boutavant.

The Paris-based sales company has also taken world rights on “Night Birds,” a TV film produced by popular Gallic thesp Alain Chabat (currently filming “Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian”), helmed by Marion Vernoux (“Venus Beauty Institute”) and starring Emma de Caunes and Emilie Dequenne.

Both pick-ups will be presented during Mipcom, which runs Oct. 13-17 in Cannes.

Directed by Sophie Roze and Emilie Sengelin, “Ariol” follows the adventures of a lovable 9-year-old donkey turning on his school, friends and family life. The series will air in France on TF1.

Split into two 90-minute parts, “Night Birds” is a drama chronicling the journey of a young woman overcoming heartaches, unemployment and drug addiction in Paris through the 70s and the 80s.

AB will also present new seasons of its TV cop show “The Rookies,” which airs on M6 and TV family comedy “Desperate Parents.”

AB Intl. Distribution is part of AB Group, which has a stockmarket valuation of Euros 720 millions ($1.1 billion). TFI holds a 33.5% stake in the shingle. AB also has one of the largest catalogs of TV series in Europe and owns and operates 20 satellite channels in France and Belgium.
