Agency, Pete Tong team on new music unit
The William Morris Agency has formed William Morris Electronic, a joint venture with DJ Pete Tong, to focus on the electronic music market.
Tong’s first foray into the agency representation business, WME will sign, develop and represent electronic artists, as well as creating and programming electronic music properties.
Agent Joel Zimmerman has joined WMA to head WME. The WME group will consist of music agents across WMA’s offices, led by David Levy (Tong’s responsible agent) in the London office, Zimmerman and Sam Kirby in the New York office, and Marc Geiger in the Beverly Hills office.
Tong first gained fame as host of BBC Radio 1’s Friday night Essential Selection & Essential Mix radio shows. Tong is also one of the world’s premier live DJs.
“On the heels of our U.K. music department expansion, this is an important next step to ensure that William Morris covers all facets of the music business around the globe,” said Peter Grosslight, WMA’s Worldwide Head of Music.
WME head Zimmerman founded the electronic artist agency Division One and has been involved with booking electronic acts for the past eight years. During the past 2½ years, Zimmerman has worked with WMA to service its roster of clients, among them Groove Armada, the Crystal Method and LCD Soundsystem.
Zimmerman is bringing with him a roster of electronic artists, including Steve Lawler and James Zabiela.
