It seems actors will do anything to guarantee a big opening weekend.
Rainn Wilson, who toplines the new comedy “The Rocker,” set his sights on a big debut frame for the laffer. And he enlisted some of his “Office” mates — even kidnapping one — to make it happen.Jenna Fischer, Wilson’s co-star from “The Office,” was being held hostage — in the trunk of Wilson’s Firebird — and wasn’t to be released unless “The Rocker” rocks the weekend wickets to the tune of $18.7 million. It’s all chronicled at freejennanow.com.
The quirky promo site includes links to Fischer’s MySpace blog (where the kidnapping was first reported) and a timer counting down the days until her release.
Videos feature Wilson in a parking lot promoting the pic with Fischer screaming behind from the hatchback of the Firebird. Fellow “Office” thesps plead for Fischer’s release but most of the time the actor loses interest in Fischer’s welfare and moves on to discuss more pressing needs … such as B.J. Novak‘s search for standup comedy material.
Interestingly, some of the clips promote NBC.com and “The Office” — a curious bit of crossover since “The Rocker” is a 20th Century Fox film. NBC says neither the network nor sister studio Universal has any affiliation or connection with the blog.
