‘Twilight’ soundtrack opens at No. 1

Atlantic release sells 165,000 copies

The soundtrack to “Twilight,” released 2½ weeks before the film hits theaters, opened at No. 1 on the nation’s album sales chart.

Atlantic release sold 165,000 copies, making it the third soundtrack to hit No. 1 this year. It did not, however, post a sales record for the year among soundtracks, which belongs to “High School Musical 3” even though the “HSM3” disc has not reached No. 1.

Rock-oriented release is driven by new tracks from Paramore plus songs by Linkin Park and Muse. Album was one of four top 10 debuts.

Hinder’s second release “Take It to the Limit” (Universal Republic) sold 81,000 to open at No. 4. First single is “Without You,” the video for which features “Twilight” star Kellan Lutz. Band is headlining the seventh annual Jagermeister Music Tour, which runs through Thanksgiving eve.

Andrea Bocelli’s “Incanto” (Decca) moved 62,000 to take eighth place. And Brad Paisley’s “Play” (Arista Nashville) pressed 54,000 to land at No. 9.

Q-Tip, the rap legend from A Tribe Called Quest, popped in at No. 11, selling 34,000 copies of “The Renaissance” (Universal).

With Halloween finished, labels start to eye Christmas and early shoppers turned their attention to holiday tunes. Sarah Brightman’s holiday collection, “Winter Symphony” (Manhattan) sold 14,000 to debut at No. 38; a Starbucks compilation, “Winter Wonderland,” percolated with 12,000 (No. 42); and Harry Connick Jr.’s third holiday disc, “What a Night! A Christmas Album” (Columbia), decked 12,000 halls to open at No. 48.

But Faith Hill’s “Joy to the World” is the current leader, selling 20,000 copies and leaping 15 slots to No. 22 in its fourth week. Casting Crowns’ “Peace on Earth” moved 16,000 to shoot up 13 slots to No. 33.

It was a good week for teens with their names in the news. Taylor Swift, whose sophomore album “Fearless” was released Tuesday, saw her self-titled debut sell 19,000 and rise eight slots to No. 26. Miley Cyrus, whose Hannah Montana” returned to Disney Channel last week, was up 3,000 units to 12,000, moving to No. 45.
