In a year where just about every indicator seemed to point downward, Variety has found another one: Awards.
For the first time in 10 years of keeping tallies, the number of kudos given out at hundreds of events dropped. In 2008, 5,046 awards were given out at 326 events, compared with the 5,399 trophies disbursed at 364 ceremonies in 2007.
There could be several factors at play: ratings dips for kudocasts, the 100-day writers strike and the economy, which certainly put a damper on many celebrations.
Dare we hope that 2009 will be better despite a looming SAG strike?
