Scott O'Neil replacing Steve Mills at network
Madison Square Garden has demoted the president of its sports division Steve Mills, replacing him with Scott O’Neil.
At MSG, Mills, who gets the new, lesser title of president of MSG’s sports teams (encompassing the Knicks, the Rangers and the WNBA Liberty) ran afoul of the embarassing headlines last summer and fall ignited by the trial of the Knicks’ president Isiah Thomas for harassing a female executive of MSG.
The exec, Anucha Browne Sanders, won a federal civil judgment against MSG of $11.6 million. Earlier this year, MSG pushed out Thomas in favor of Donnie Walsh, former head of the Indiana Pacers.
O’Neil spent the previous seven years at the National Basketball Assn., rising to senior VP of marketing and business operations. Mills will report to O’Neil, who reports to Hank Ratner, vice chairman of MSG and its parent Cablevision.
