Images a main focus of Hong Kong media

Police have arrested seven more people allegedly involved in the celebrity porn scandal that has dominated Hong Kong headlines for much of the past week.

The scandal has gripped the territory not just because of the anatomical level of detail in some of the pictures that all relate to singer-actor Edison Chen, but also because of the quantity and prominence of his apparent conquests.

So far, the likenesses of singer-actress Gillian Chung (“Twins Effect,” “Mei Lan Fang”,) leading actress Cecilia Cheung (“One Nite in Mongkok,” “The Promise,”) and TV presenter Bobo Chan have surfaced in compromising positions in the pics.

Police arrested a man Sunday morning following six arrests on Saturday in two separate locations. A total of eight people had been arrested by Sunday night.

Three men and a woman were released on bail of HK$20,000 and ordered to report back in eight weeks time. All are believed to be involved in secondary distribution of the pictures, which started appearing a week ago.

Although Internet service providers quickly removed Web pages with the images, pics were swiftly reposted on other sites and blogs. Newspapers and magazines have since reprinted many of the images, albeit with careful shading.

“Even if these people are not the principal sources, we believe we are very close to them,” assistant commissioner of police Wong Fook-chuen said.

In one of the Saturday raids, police seized computer equipment apparently containing hundreds of images. Many were related to the previously distributed pictures but had not been circulated on the Internet.

Although agents for Chen and Cung initially suggested that the pics were composites, it seems increasingly likely that the pics are genuine and that they were copied from Chen’s laptop computer when he took it in for repair.

Local newspapers have reported that 14 other female celebs risk compromise, including Maggie Q, Elva Hsiao, Jolin Tsai, Nikki Chow, Rain Li and Rosanne Wong.
