A rather wacky Teutonic entertainment/gameshow may provide clues for how Hugh Jackman will fare in the high- profile glare as the next Oscar host.
As a recent guest on Germany’s “Wetten, dass …?,” he lightheartedly asked host Thomas Gottschalk, regarded as the country’s top emcee, for some tips. The host took him seriously, demanding that he stay the entire 2 ½ hours of the ZDF series as a trainee.
During the show, Jackman rescued Germany’s tiny blonde Family Minister Ursula von der Leyen, 50, from a potentially embarrassing tight spot. She had awkwardly climbed into a large empty garbage can to celebrate a winning bet with a 9-year-old boy. When it seemed clear she wasn’t going to get out of the trash can without some sort of wardrobe malfunction, Jackman rushed across the stage and hoisted her out of the trash can jam. To thunderous cheers, Jackman carried von der Leyen, King Kong-style, across the stage and onto a sofa.
“Okay, that’s it,” Gottschalk deadpanned. “We can all go home now. He can take over from here.”
A prescription for the Oscars? The show’s sagging ratings got a big boost.
