BUDAPEST — Hungarian broadcaster Antenna Hungaria, owned by Telediffusion de France, is to spearhead the country’s first foray into digital TV.
On Friday, Hungary’s National Telecommunication Authority granted AH 12-year licenses to launch a DTT platform consisting of five or more television channels. AH beat out Slovak-backed company Digital Broadcasting in its tender. When fully operational, AH digital programming could reach as many as 1 million households. Other players in the local biz, such as terrestrial network RTL Klub and cabler UPC, are expected to follow the move into digital soon, which will transform a market dominated at present by the three analog channels. Analog TV in Hungary is set to be switched off by 2012.Hungary makes move into digital TV
