The word “Islam” is so loaded in Gaul that it was enough to knock 9-year-old Islam Alaouchiche out of contention for a spot in youth program “In ze boite” (In the box).
Casting agents for Angel Prods. allegedly told his mother Farah Alaouchiche that Islam’s name “represented a religion that was not liked in France” and suggested he change it to another Arab name such as Mohammed or Sofiane.
She refused — and Islam lost the gig.
The production company told Le Parisien that “if Islam wasn’t selected, it was because there were more candidates than places available.” But it did admit that “the casting agent did not react as she should have” and promised to let Islam, who lives with his Algerian family just outside Paris, take part in a future edition of the show.
