Actress, 'Revolutionary Road,' 'The Reader'

English-born Winslet, who began acting at 13, has surprised audiences more than once with realistic and diverse performances, such as a teenage would-be murderer (“Heavenly Creatures”) or a romantic figure (“Titanic”). This year, in “Revolutionary Road” Winslet reteams with “Titanic” castmate Leonardo DiCaprio under the direction of her husband, Sam Mendes, for a story about the intense marriage of an American couple in the 1950s who are trying to escape the social confines of suburbia. And, in a continuing display of versatility, Winslet also stars in “The Reader,” based on the book by Bernhard Schlink about a boy’s obsession with an older woman, who in turn harbors secrets in post-World War II Germany.
