‘The Color Purple’ fading fast

NEW YORK — The road fell about 3.2% in Week 2 (June 2-8) of the new season, bringing the total gross for the 13-show slate to $12,575,325.

This week saw the debut of “The Color Purple” in Pittsburgh, but its numbers declined significantly, garnering only $689,513, lower than its previous week in Detroit, which drew in $1,429,429.

Notable leaps and bounds included the Chicago production of “Wicked,” which pulled in about $175,000 more than last week for a total of $1,009,478, and “Monty Python’s Spamalot,” which debuted in Oklahoma City at about $170,000 more than last week in Minnesota.

Not all of the tuners saw an uptick. “High School Musical” moved to Las Vegas to a smaller venue, and its numbers fell more than $265,000. And the previous week’s hit “Mamma Mia!” dropped more than $280,000 in its second week in Denver to $781,794.

“Wicked” continued to rise in Rochester, N.Y., pulling in $1,308,291,earning the highest gross of the week.
