Musical to open on Dec. 14
“Shrek” has set dates for Broadway, with the tuner adaptation of the DreamWorks Animation pic beginning performances in Gotham on Nov. 8 ahead of a Dec. 14 opening.
As expected, the musical will play the Broadway Theater, the large Rialto venue soon to be vacated by “The Color Purple.”
Cast will include Sutton Foster (“Thoroughly Modern Millie,” “Young Frankenstein”) as the princess Fiona, Christopher Sieber (“Monty Python’s Spamalot”) as bad-guy Lord Farquaad and Kecia Lewis-Evans (“The Drowsy Chaperone”) as the dragon. Male leads to play Shrek and pal Donkey remain to be cast.
Musical is based on the 2001 CG movie about the titular grumpy green ogre, as well as on the 1990 William Steig book that inspired the pic. Big-budget stage production reps the first legit outing for DreamWorks Animation arm DreamWorks Theatricals, which co-produces with Sam Mendes’ Neal Street Prods.
“Shrek” has music by Jeanine Tesori (“Caroline, or Change”) and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire (“Rabbit Hole”). Jason Moore (“Avenue Q”) helms the show, which is skedded for a tryout at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theater beginning in August.
