Road off to a good start in Week 1

Road Grosses

NEW YORK — The road rose about 9.7% in Week 1 of the new season (May 26-June 1), bringing the total gross for the 13-show slate to $12,988,558.

This week saw the return of “Mamma Mia!” after a week of layoff, and a new addition: “A Chorus Line,” which started off at the Ahmanson Theater in Los Angeles with a respectable $688,249.

Notable leaps included “Monty Python’s Spamalot,” which pulled in about $250,000 more than last week for a total of $1,003,076, and “Avenue Q,” which jumped about $140,000 in Chicago.

Not all of the tuners saw an uptick; all three productions of “Wicked” fell more than $150,000 this week, though the traveling production broke the house record on its first week in Rochester, N.Y. (The house there is much smaller than Kansas City’s Music Hall, hence the decline).

“The Color Purple” continued to rise in Detroit, pulling in $1,429,429 — more than $100,000 above last week’s number, and the highest gross of the week.
