Risch replaces original star Hoff after injury
The previewing revival of “Pal Joey” has a new Joey.
Original star Christian Hoff has withdrawn due to a foot injury suffered during the Nov. 21 perf of the musical, currently playing at Studio 54. Understudy Matthew Risch, who has since played the role in Hoff’s absence, will step in permanently.
Opening of “Joey” has been postponed a week, from Dec. 11 to Dec. 18.
Hoff, who won a 2006 Tony for his turn in “Jersey Boys,” led a cast that includes Stockard Channing and Martha Plimpton. Risch comes to the role after stints in “Legally Blonde” and “Chicago.”
The Roundabout Theater Company’s revival of 1940 tuner “Joey” is helmed by Joe Mantello, with an update of the original book (by John O’Hara) from Richard Greenberg. Songs, by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, include “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered” and “I Could Write a Book.”
