Broadway Grosses

With the annual awards season beginning to direct focus toward the legit world, Broadway sales climbed last week.

“The Little Mermaid” ($1,115,988) may not generally be considered a kudos fave, but the popular Disney tuner nonetheless registered the week’s largest jump in sales, rising around $145,000. “In the Heights” ($585,934), widely thought a forerunner in the Tony race, also had a strong week with box office up by around $120,000.

“Legally Blonde” ($719,455) and “A Chorus Line” ($482,116) — with new star Mario Lopez toplining — logged nice six-figure upticks as well.

Also on the rise with solid five-figure jumps were “November” ($446,285), “A Catered Affair” ($424,552), “The Phantom of the Opera” ($837,131), “Rent” ($531,580) and “Passing Strange” ($259,911), among others.

Nearly every show on the boards saw a bump in receipts, with total cume hitting $20.3 million for 33 shows reporting (or $21.4 million including estimates for “Young Frankenstein”).

Among previewing tuners, “Boeing-Boeing” ($284,645) and “Top Girls” ($181,049) both played their first eight-perf weeks, while “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” ($244,170) and “Thurgood” ($208,911) saw modest gains.

The season’s last-minute addition, “Glory Days,” brought in only $56,668 in its first eight perfs, suffering in part from a truncated lead time to drum up the show’s profile.

Meanwhile, “August: Osage County” dropped out for the week, as the show packed up and moved from the Imperial Theater to the Music Box.

The 27 musicals grossed $17,475,745 ($18,549,745 estimated) for 85.9% of the Broadway total, with an attendance of 232,215 at 87.7% capacity and average paid admission of $75.24.

The eight plays grossed $2,868,572 for 14.1% of the Broadway total, with an attendance of 45,160 at 77.9% capacity and average paid admission of $63.52.

Average paid admission was $73.34 for all shows.
