Havel’s wife ‘Leaving’ his play

Former Czech President's spouse quits lead role

PRAGUE — Former Czech President Vaclav Havel’s actress wife, Dagmar, is quitting her lead role in the play “Leaving,” which Havel wrote for her, for health reasons, just two weeks before it’s due to open.

She will reportedly be replaced by Czech thesp Zuzana Stivinova.

The play, which explores the moral dilemma facing a man who is stepping down as his nation’s leader, will preem as skedded at Prague’s Archa Theater May 22.

Havel said, “I do not cease to hope my wife will be a part of the cast one day.”

Meanwhile, Sam Walters, a.d. of the Orange Tree Theater in Richmond, south west London, will direct the U.K. preem of “Leaving” on Sept. 19. The Orange Tree has been staging Havel’s plays since 1977.
