‘Yuri’s Day’ wins at Warsaw festival

Russian film nabs top honors

WARSAW — Russian film “Yuri’s Day” by film and theater director Kirill Serebrennikov won the grand prize, worth E30,000 ($40,255) Saturday at the closing of the 24th edition of the Warsaw Film Festival.

Serebrennikov’s fourth film is about an acclaimed opera singer who reassesses her egocentric approach to life when her son disappears during a visit to a provincial town.

A Russian/German production, its award at the festival’s traditional short and low-key awards ceremony in the city’s Stalin-era Palace of Culture, came in the Warsaw Competition, one of five competitive classes in a festival renowned for its wide public appeal; this year more than 100,000 people attended screenings during the 10-day festival.

“Go With Peace Jamil,” dir. Omar Shargawi, Denmark

Free Spirit Competition:
“Tears for Sale,” dir. Uros Stojanovic, Serbia/France

Documentary Competition:
“Heavy Metal in Baghdad,” dir. Eddy Moretti, Suroosh Alvi, Canada/U.S.

Short Film Competition:
“2 Birds,” dir. Runar Runarsson, Iceland

The Fipresci award from foreign crix for East European debut went to “The Investigator,” directed by Attila Gigor of Hungary.

Next year’s 25th Warsaw Film Festival is scheduled for Oct. 9-18.
