Woody Allen’s “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” will open the Zabaltegi Pearls section of September’s San Sebastian Festival with Allen in attendance, the film’s Spanish producer Mediapro announced Thursday.
Cast members Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem, Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall will also be at the fest.
The Pearls strand is dedicated to recent fest faves.
Shot in Spain — in Barcelona and Asturias — “Vicky” world preemed to upbeat reviews at Cannes.
Its Spanish preem looks set to become one of the highlights of this year’s fest.
Allen was treated as cinema royalty when he came to San Sebastian in 2004 to present fest opener “Melinda and Melinda.”
Produced by Mediapro and Gravier Prods., with Antena 3 Films, “Vicky” bows in Spain Sept. 19, a day after its San Sebastian screening.
Exhibs tip it to become the highest-grossing Spanish film in Spain this year.
Spain’s biggest local bow so far this year is Alex de la Iglesia’s “Oxford Murders” with $12.7 million. But “Match Point” almost matched that in 2005-06 with $11.8 million.
