Stew, Miranda eligible for best actor prize
Stew and Lin-Manuel Miranda were officially added to the list of thesps eligible for the Tony for best actor in a musical, following the third of four seasonal meetings by the Tony Awards Administration Committee. There were few surprises to come out of the Thursday meeting of the admin committee, which determines trophy eligibility for Broadway creatives and producers. It was said that the committee decided against voting to reclassify “A Bronx Tale,” which had a limited Rialto run that started in the fall. After the last meeting, many legiters had been surprised to learn that “Tale,” the solo autobio penned and performed by Chazz Palminteri, was categorized as a play rather than a special event. Stew (“Passing Strange”), Miranda (“In the Heights”) and Sean Palmer (“The Little Mermaid”) have all been classified as lead actors in a tuner, while Sierra Boggess (“Mermaid”) and Mandy Gonzalez (“Heights”) are considered lead actresses. Of the four thesps in “The 39 Steps,” Charles Edwards will be considered for lead actor in a play, as will Kevin Anderson of “Come Back, Little Sheba.” S. Epatha Merkerson, also of “Sheba,” is in the mix for a lead actress in a play nom. Dylan Baker and Laurie Metcalf are eligible for featured thesp nods in “November,” while Michael Cumpsty, Alexander Gemignani and Jessica Molaskey are considered featured players in “Sunday in the Park With George.” Projection designer for “George,” Timothy Bird and the Knifedge Creative Network, will be considered jointly with set designer David Farley for the kudo for set design of a tuner. Digital projections are a major component of the design, which aims to replicate the creative process of painting. Committee decisions were otherwise consistent with the norm, which files above-the-title thesps as leads and below-the-title performers as featured. Admin committee will meet one more time next month to determine eligibility specifics for the final productions of the season.
