Stella Adler honors Sheen, Smith

Studio fetes actor, gossip columnist

The Stella Adler Studio hosted its fourth annual Stella by Starlight benefit in Gotham Monday, launching the Roy Scheider Scholarship Endowment Fund and honoring Martin Sheen and gossip columnist Liz Smith.

The late Scheider, an Adler alum and board member, was a longtime supporter of the studio’s programs aimed at aspiring inner-city thesps who can’t afford professional training. Steven Spielberg has already pledged $50,000 to jump-start the fund, which will further enrich outreach programs at the studio.

Scheider was also given a Group Theater Award for prolific achievement onstage, which was accepted by his wife, Brenda Siemer Scheider.

Sheen received the Marlon Brando Award in recognition of both his film work and social activism, while Liz Smith (who contributes to Daily Variety) earned the Harold Clurman Lifetime Achievement Award.

Also feted was AON exec Pamela J. Newman, with the Harold Clurman Spirit Award.
