Documentary profiles 1974 concert

Sony Pictures Classics has nabbed North American and Latin American rights to Jeffrey Levy-Hinte’s “Soul Power.” Docu profiles a 1974 concert of R&B headliners who converged in southern Africa during the Muhammad Ali-George Foreman fight known as the “rumble in the jungle.”

“ ’Zaire ‘74’ is a legendary musical festival, which circumstances have conspired to conceal from a wider public,” Levy-Hinte said.

“Soul Power” is Levy-Hinte’s first gig as director. He produced “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired,” the teen drama “Thirteen” and edited the Oscar-winning “When We Were Kings,” also about the 1974 Ali-Foreman fight.

The deal marks the second doc sale this week for Submarine Entertainment, which previously put “Witch Hunt” with MSNBC Films (Daily Variety, Nov. 3). Celluloid Dreams is handling “Soul Power’s” international sales at the American Film Market, opening today.
