Studio acquires rights to courtroom drama

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American rights to helmer Nikita Mikhalkov’s courtroom drama “12,” a loose adaptation of Sidney Lumet’s 1957 morality tale “12 Angry Men.”

Set in contemporary Russia, the film concerns a young Chechen boy on trial for killing his adoptive father.

Jumping in front of the camera, Mikhalkov plays one of the jurors, a group of ethnic Slavs divided by “racism and prejudice” who must determine the boy’s guilt or innocence. Mikhalkov penned the script along with Vladimir Moiseenko and Alexander Novostky, based on the original screenplay by Reginald Rose. The Mikhalkov pic is Oscar nominated for foreign-language film.
