‘Slumdog’ cashes in at box office

'Boy in Striped Pajamas' lands in top 10

Fox Searchlight’s “Slumdog Millionaire” became a millionaire over the weekend in only its second sesh.

“Slumdog,” directed by Danny Boyle, scored a rousing per-location average of $31,050 as it expanded from 10 to 32 runs. The triumph-of-the-spirit drama grossed an estimated $993,606 for a cume of $1.6 million.

“Slumdog” isn’t the only limited film in the market making noise.

Miramax’s holocaust drama “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” landed on the top 10 box office chart over the weekend, coming in No. 9. Film grossed an estimated $1.7 million from 406 runs for a cume of $2.7 million and per-location average of $4,121, according to Rentrak.

The specialty biz has struggled much of the year. And many of the award contenders haven’t even opened yet, further dampening the marketplace.

“Slumdog’s” promising early box office run could up its awards profile, since voters like to know that a film is resonating with moviegoers.

Sony Pictures Classics’ Anne Hathaway drama “Rachel Getting Married” is another awards contender with good standing at the box office.

Film has grossed $8 million to date, although “Slumdog’s” second sesh was stronger.

Another limited player, Samuel Goldwyn/IDP’s faith-based pic “Fireproof,” also continues to do well. Pic has been a sleeper hit, grossing $31.5 million through Sunday.

Among other indies currently on the marquee, Sony Pictures Classics’ “I’ve Loved You So Long” posted a per-screen average of $5,286 over the weekend, grossing an estimated $185,016 from 35 screens for a cume of $1.2 million in its fifth week.

IFC’s “A Christmas Tale” posted a per-screen average of $4,455 in its second weekend, grossing an estimated $160,400 as it expanded to 36 screens for a cume of $253,862.

SPC’s “Synecdoche, New York” grossed an estimated $342,971 from 111 screens for a per-screen average of $3,090 and a cume of $1.6 million.

Indie pic “Noah’s Arc” grossed an estimated $17,798 from five locations for a per-location average of $3,560 and cume of $481,707 in its fifth week.
